VoteVets Endorses Former Army Captain Deb McGrath for Congress

Menomonie, WI—Today, VoteVets wholeheartedly endorsed Deb McGrath, a former Army Captain, CIA officer, and candidate for Congress in Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional district. McGrath was the only woman in her Airborne Training Course and one of few women to serve on the Demilitarized Zone in the early 80s. VoteVets is the largest progressive group of veterans in America.

“With so many external threats from abroad and at home, we need someone with Deb’s experience in the military and security, as a credible voice in Congress,” said Will Fischer, Iraq War Veteran and Senior Advisor for VoteVets. “Deb knows what it takes to keep America and Wisconsin families safe. But, more so, she’s been deeply involved in the kitchen table issues that families face, and knows what it will take to keep our families strong, as well. We’re proud to endorse her.”

“I have proudly lived a life of service to my country, and am humbled that VoteVets has recognized my leadership and candidacy,” said Deb McGrath. “As an officer and military spouse, I know that service means sacrifice for our country. I will continue to honor the oath I took to defend our Constitution and support our Veterans. While serving our country abroad, I saw firsthand how democracies can thrive or fall depending on their responsiveness to community needs like affordable health care, economic security, and voting rights. I am a staunch advocate for these issues and ensuring all Western Wisconsin families have a fair shot, and I am thrilled to have the support of VoteVets in my campaign for Congress.”

The announcement comes the same day that Deb McGrath was endorsed by former candidate for US Senate and Ret. US Marine Corps Lt. Col. Amy McGrath and her organization Honor Bound, which aims to support women with a service background to run for office.

About Deb McGrath

Born and raised in western Wisconsin, Deb McGrath is a former Army Captain, CIA officer, and working mother of three children. She and her husband, Colonel Kevin McGrath (U.S. Army, Retired), raised their three children with an emphasis on public and community service. Deb’s father is the late Democratic Congressman Al Baldus and her mother, Lolly, served in education for over 20 years. Both of her parents came from farm families. Deb grew up listening to the concerns of those in her community.

Deb McGrath served 25 years in national security positions requiring non-partisan strategies for mission accomplishment. McGrath will fight for issues that keep America strong: affordable and accessible healthcare, economic opportunity, smart infrastructure investments, strong voting rights, and respect for human dignity. She will advocate to bring broadband to all communities in Wisconsin, as this is critical for the economic success of families, small businesses, and farms. Deb is a rational thinker who will tackle these issues with common sense and collaboration.

While in the U.S. Army, Deb McGrath served on the demilitarized zone in Korea and at several U.S. military bases. In the CIA, her assignments included Southeast and South Asia, West Africa, the former Soviet Union, and Central Europe, including two combat zones. She was awarded parachutist wings, the U.S. Army Meritorious Service Medal, and the CIA Career Medal, among several other awards.

WI-03 is a competitive seat that may determine the partisan majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022. The current Congressman, Democrat Ron Kind, won the district by 3 points in 2020.
